Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan

Plays beautifully. When I played this for Amy she said, "Wow, I never realized how much I really liked Bob Dylan." I think my favorite song on this album is "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright."

I don't really have much to add. I played it over a month ago when I was deep in the depths of studying for finals and I don't remember much. Plus I'm home alone and drinking because fuck you I'm a grown up I can do what I want.

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home

Played this one last week some time. I've just been so busy with school I haven't been able to update the blog. I'm so glad this semester is almost over.

At any rate, when I was young, probably right around the age I was when I still thought Catcher in the Rye was great, well before I realized Holden Caulfield was just a douche,  I started listening to Bob Dylan. This was one of the first two albums I listened to. Guess what the other one was. Go ahead. Guess. I'll wait.

Correct: Highway 61 Revisited.

They are both great albums. I still like Dylan. I probably like him more now than I did when I was old enough to have realized that everyone was wrong about everything, but not yet old enough to have realized I was too.

Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner

So this one cleaned up nicely and plays well. I like Tom Waits. But I like old creepy The Black Rider, Tom Waits, not young, hip, witty Tom Waits. This is cool and all and I might play it at a party for background. I don't think I'd ever play it on my own. Nice live double album though and it's in pretty good shape so that's cool. I just really prefer Tom Waits' work from after he embraced the dark side of the force. This is from before.

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

Yesterday after I picked up the turntable, Steve, that's my brother, and I went to Skinny Dennis, this bar he likes over in Williamsburg. They have good cheap beer, decent music on the jukebox, and the crowd is alright, for the most part. My brother isn't related to my sister, he and I share a dad not a mom (my sister and I are the other way around). So he's got no connection to these albums. But he lives in Jersey City and he likes Brooklyn and we like hanging out so he came with me to get the turntable.

Anyway me and Steve are sitting in Skinny Dennis and Atlantic City by Springsteen comes on. We love that song. Both of us. We grew up together in Jersey, so we're kind of required to. It's a great song. We talked about how much we loved it, how we both think it might be our favorite song by the Boss.

Well one of the records in the collection is Nebraska. So I pulled it out today to see if I could get it to play. For some reason, even though it has an inner sleeve, it wasn't *in* it. So I was worried. But its in good shape. Plays great. Amy is out food shopping (thanks to The Cars) so it's just me and James.

As soon as Atlantic City comes on James puts down his grilled cheese sandwich, climbs down from his chair, and starts swinging his arms and bopping his head and grooving to it. So James is one of us.

Poor kid.

The record cleaned up pretty good but it's a little warped in such a way that the first track on side 2 skips to about a minute into the song no matter what I do. There's also some noticeable popping toward the end of the last song on the second side. The rest of it seems to play just fine.

Phil Ochs - Pleasures of the Harbor

The... Pleasures... of the Harbor? Really, Phil Ochs?

Really?

Peter, Paul and Mary - Peter, Paul and Mary

True story. Peter Yarrow, the short creepy looking guy on this album cover (not the tall creepy looking guy, that's Paul), molested a 14-year-old girl in his hotel room in 1970. Then in 2010 he performed "the Colonoscopy Song" live on a morning news show on CBS.

Now, back in 1962, my dad had no way of predicting either of those things.

But that's still no excuse for not realizing how fucking awful this goddam album was.

I mean god dammit.

GOD DAMMIT!

Jane Olivor - Chasing Rainbows

Again with this lady. This time she looks less like a PTA mom and more like a dude in drag, which, to be honest, if I had to pick one, I'd go with the dude in drag. I want to see the other photos from this shoot.
"Show me happy!"
*click-click!*
"Show me sad."
*click-click!*
"Show me ANGRY!"
*click-click!*
"Show me you just got a new puppy!"
*click-click!*
"Show me, you ran out of coke and you can't get your dealer on the phone!"
Then she got sick of the asshole photographer, started thinking about firing him and: *click-click!*
That was the photo they went with.

Also, not for nothing, but I don't know anything about most of these artists so I'm just using what wikipedia says about their genres. I have a really hard time believing this lady ever produced anything that could be fairly categorized as rock.

Jane Olivor - The Best Side of Goodbye

I have no idea who this woman is. She looks like she's really frustrated by the other bitches at the PTA meeting. Soon as she gets home she's gonna down half a bottle of chardonnay and give her daughter an eating disorder.

The Concert for Bangladesh

This was a nice thing for George to do. Of all the Beatles, he seems like the coolest one. Nice guy, really smart, not an egotistical dick. Not a huge one anyway, not that I'm aware of. From the reports I've heard Lennon was a tool and I've never been a huge fan of McCartney. So anyway, George is a cool guy, this was a nice thing to do. I'm not a hug fan of live albums though and I heard this one kind of sucks. Still be nice if I could get it to play though.

Pete Seeger - Waist Deep in The Big Muddy and Other Love Songs

Alright, I'm attributing this one to my dad. I'm not the world's biggest fan of folk music (not sure you could tell). But even I can't hate Pete Seeger. I had no idea what this was but I googled it and apparently the title track is a big controversial anti-war song. So that's cool.

See, here's the thing about folk music. You got Pete Seeger. You got Bob Dylan. Then you got a bunch of crap that I can't freaking stand...

Leon Russell - Best of Leon

I remember really liking this guy when I was a kid. I have no idea whose this was. Might have been my stepfather's. Even if it was, you can be a dangerous psychopath and still have good taste in music.

Donovan - Mellow Yellow

Is Donovan folk? He probably is. I should probably get rid of that tag because I'm not gonna really know when it applies. Anyway, my dad used to sing the title track of this song to me all the time when I was a kid. I thought it was funny. So I shouldn't blame mom for all the Donovan. I'm gonna anyway. But I shouldn't.

Donovan - Fairy Tale

My mom liked to write her name on a lot of these albums. My dad too. I don't remember ever doing that with CDs. I don't know what the deal is.

Cat Stevens - Catch Bull At Four

Have steak at six, I'm guessing.

Simon & Garfunkel - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

This one was mom's. Has her name on it. Pretty sure this counts as folk. Your move, Pop. YOUR MOVE.

Paul Simon - Paul Simon

Nice parka. Makes you look at least 5' 2". Maybe 5'3".
Really?!?
No. No, not really.

Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends

Eh, I dunno. I knew these fucks were gonna make an appearance eventually.

Arlo Guthrie - Arlo

He told me "all the folk albums were mine" as if that was a good thing. I can't explain it. He's a pretty cool guy (if you repeat that I'll deny it). But I can't explain the taste in music. He listened to the fucking Who and the Kinks and Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix and ZAPPA... and Arlo fucking Guthrie? You explain it to me, I don't get it.

Donovan - A Gift from a Flower to a Garden

My mom wanted to bone Donovan so god damned bad.
